Bocconi University is seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as Director of its Institute for European Policymaking https://iep.unibocconi.eu/, a research centre dedicated to bridging frontier research and real-world impact based in Milan, Italy.

The Director will shape the Institute’s intellectual agenda, taking into account the current international context and the new challenges facing the EU, steering cross-disciplinary research that advances evidence-based policymaking in the European Union and its member states. This is a rare opportunity to influence how academic knowledge informs societal progress, while engaging directly with governments, international organizations, and private sector leaders.

The role

·Shape and implement the Institute’s research strategy.

·Further develop and lead a diverse team of senior scholars, including several Bocconi faculty members, and policy experts across multiple disciplines.

·Secure and steward competitive research funding as well as funds from philanthropic sources.

·Represent the Institute in high-level forums, ensuring its voice is heard in the debates that matter.

·Guarantee excellence, methodological rigor, and policy relevance in all outputs.

The profile

We seek a leader with:

·A PhD in the social sciences, such as economics, political science, or related fields.

·A proven track record of directing complex research initiatives, showing creativity and innovation skills as well.

·Experience in policy organizations, in particular in EU institutions, and ability in translating research into actionable policy.

·Strong fundraising, team management and team-building experience.

·Ability to contribute to the policy and public debate, evidenced by media exposure, contributions to high-level reports and participation in public events.

The offer

The position offers a competitive, internationally benchmarked salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary may benefit from a special fiscal regime for the first six years of tax residence in Italy for candidates who were previously tax residents abroad. This special regime may be extended for up to thirteen years, depending on family circumstances and whether a residential property is purchased in Italy.

No teaching is required. Knowledge of Italian language is not required and there are no restrictions regarding the nationality of the applicants. The appointment is for a three-year term and may be renewed, with an indicative starting date of 1 March 2026.
